The complex interaction of local tectonics and volcanism usually produces palaeoenvironments that require to be studied in detail in order to define the role of each factor in the local palaeoenvironmental evolution. This is the case for the Sousaki Basin lying at the eastern part of the Gulf of Corinth. It presents a complex Pliocene and Pleistocene stratigraphy, affected by deformational processes due to the local tectonic regime. The Sousaki volcano is a low standing volcano that constitutes the western endpoint of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc and may also contribute to the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the basin. The studied section, in the Sousaki Basin, consists of marly and conglomeratic layers with intercalations of organic rich sediments. The base of the section consists of impermeable volcanic products. A micropalaeontological analysis based on 29 samples has been conducted in order to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment after the termination of the activity of the last volcanic period. A diversified fauna has been retrieved, consisting of Gelasian (early Pleistocene) ostracods, gastropods, diatoms, charophyte gyrogonites, thecamoebians, fish otoliths and teeth. Count-based statistical treatments performed on ostracod species revealed that a volcano-tectonic lake evolved after the emplacement of the volcanic products in the basin. Afterwards, a braided river environment dominated the landscape. Due to the lateral migration of the riverbed, several laterally evolving sub-environments were established, ranging from marginal lakes to marshes. Ultimately, the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the study area revealed the formation, evolution and demise of a tectonically controlled volcanic lake. 相似文献

Our aim was to analyse the impact of zooplankton dynamics on the relative importance of two mechanisms contributing to the loss of phosphorus (P) from the epilimnion of stratified lakes: net population incorporation into zooplankton biomass and P sedimentation. 2. We established enclosures without Daphnia (control), with a growing Daphnia population (treatment D) and with a high, stable Daphnia population (treatment D+). The P incorporated in zooplankton biomass and sedimented was measured at short intervals over a period of 17 days. 3. In both Daphnia treatments, sedimentation increased and the P content of sedimented matter was higher than in the control and highest in D+. The P loss by sedimentation between day 3 and 17 was generally high (>25%, >1.8% day?1) with particularly high values in D+ (~60%, 4.3% day?1). Phosphorus sedimentation was higher in the zooplankton treatments, although the contribution of exuviae and dead Daphnia was minor. Faecal material was probably a major component of sedimentation. 4. By contrast, the amount of P in zooplankton (mainly Daphnia) biomass increased in D but remained constant in D+. Phosphorus loss owing to net population incorporation was generally low and ranged up to 6.5% (0.5% day?1) in treatment D. A positive relationship between Daphnia dry mass and P sedimentation, as well as P incorporation, was found. 5. Sedimentation is evidently an important cause of P loss from the epilimnion where Daphnia is abundant. 1. Methanogenic carbon can be incorporated by methane‐oxidising bacteria, leading to a 13C‐depleted stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of chironomids that feed on these microorganisms. This has been shown for the chironomid tribe Chironomini, but very little information is available about the δ13C of other abundant chironomid groups and the relationship between chironomid δ13C and methane production in lakes. 2. Methane flux was measured at the water surface of seven lakes in Sweden. Furthermore, fluxes from the sediments to the water column were measured in transects in two of the lakes. Methane fluxes were then compared with δ13C of chitinous chironomid remains isolated from the lake surface sediments. Several different chironomid groups were examined (Chironomini, Orthocladiinae, Tanypodinae and Tanytarsini). 3. Remains of Orthocladiinae in the seven study lakes had the highest δ13C values (?31.3 to ?27.0‰), most likely reflecting δ13C of algae and other plant‐derived organic matter. Remains of Chironomini and Tanypodinae had lower δ13C values (?33.2 to ?27.6‰ and ?33.6 to ?28.0‰, respectively). A significant negative correlation was observed between methane fluxes at the lake surface and δ13C of Chironomini (r = ?0.90, P = 0.006). Methane release from the sediments was also negatively correlated with δ13C of Chironomini (r = ?0.67, P = 0.025) in the transect samples obtained from two of the lakes. The remains of other chironomid taxa were only weakly or not correlated with methane fluxes measured in our study lakes (P > 0.05). 4. Selective incorporation of methane‐derived carbon can explain the observed correlations between methane fluxes and δ13C values of Chironomini. Remains of this group might therefore have the potential to provide information about past changes in methane availability in lakes using sediment records. However, differences in productivity, algal δ13C composition and the importance of allochthonous organic matter input between the studied lakes may also have influenced Chironomini δ13C. More detailed studies with a higher number of analysed samples and detailed measurement of δ13C of different ecosystem components (e.g. methane, dissolved inorganic carbon) will be necessary to further resolve the relative contribution of different carbon sources to δ13C of chironomid remains. 相似文献

Grotte des Pigeons at Taforalt, north-east Morocco, is well known for a large assemblage of Iberomaurusian (Epipalaeolithic) skeletons, possibly representing the earliest and most extensively used prehistoric cemetery in North Africa. New archaeological excavations carried out in 2005 and 2006 revealed further human remains in a largely undisturbed burial area in an alcove at the back of the cave. This discovery provides the first opportunity to report on Iberomaurusian human mortuary activity at this site. Reported here are a closely spaced and inter-cutting series of four burials. These contained the remains of four adults, of which three were buried in a seated or slightly reclining position facing towards the cave entrance and one was buried in a highly flexed position on its left side. The distribution of articulated and disarticulated bones suggested intensive use of the area, with earlier burials disturbed or truncated by subsequent burials, and displaced skeletal elements deliberately or unwittingly incorporated into later depositions. Through this process, parts of a single skeleton were redistributed among several discrete graves and within the surrounding deposit. Some aspects of the Iberomaurusian funerary tradition that are evident from the human remains excavated in the 1950s are absent in the newly excavated adult burials, suggesting a possible elaboration of funerary activity over time. 相似文献

Abstract: Pachytraga Paquier, 1900, the stratigraphically oldest genus of caprinine caprinid rudist, was previously known from only two chronospecies from a single lineage, that is the Hauterivian P. tubiconcha Astre, 1961 and the early Aptian P. paradoxa (Pictet and Campiche, 1869). Here, a new species, Pachytraga? tanakahitoshii, is erected on the basis of isolated left valves recovered from the Osaka and Sanchu areas, south‐west Japan. This species has a moderate shell size (antero‐posterior commissural diameter c. 30 mm), and its left valve is characterized by at least one possibly autapomorphic character (narrow anterior myophore, inclined inwards), as well as a mosaic of primitive (single longitudinal carina developed on the anterior side) and derived (simple marginal canals in the antero‐dorsal valve margin) characters of Mediterranean and Middle East Tethyan Pachytraga. The Japanese Pachytraga? represents the first probable record of this genus outside the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern Tethyan province, and its early Barremian age partly fills the ‘gap’ in its previously known stratigraphical record, although the evolutionary relationship of the Japanese form with Mediterranean and Middle East Tethyan Pachytraga remains unsolved. However, the discovery of early Barremian Pachytraga? in Japan indicates that the evolutionary history of the genus is more complex than previously thought and should thus be discussed in a broader palaeogeographical context that must now include the Pacific. 相似文献

Benthic diatoms form a particularly important community in oligotrophic lakes, but factors influencing their distribution are not well known. This study reports the depth distribution of living motile and total diatoms (living plus dead diatoms) on both natural (from sand to fine organic mud) and artificial substrates in an oligotrophic lake. On artificial substrates, motile diatom densities peaked in abundance (24–30 cells · mm?2) between 0.6 and 1.9 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, motile diatoms were generally more numerous and peaked in abundance (925 cells · mm?2) at 1.3 m depth. Total diatom densities on artificial substrates were highest (1260 valves · mm?2) at 0.6 m depth, with very low values below 3 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, total diatom abundances were generally much higher (21600 valves · mm?2) at 3 m depth and declined gradually with depth. Significant relationships were found between light and diatom densities on the artificial substrate. Ordination analysis indicated that substrate type significantly correlated with the variation of diatom composition on artificial and natural substrates. Our results suggest that in oligotrophic lakes, light influences benthic diatom abundance, whereas substrate type has more influence on benthic diatom composition. 相似文献

Snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus) populations have declined throughout their range, in part because of habitat degradation and poor nest success, making information regarding regionally specific nest site selection and spatial patterns important when considering habitat conservation and management guidelines. We determined nest site selection characteristics (n = 180) and examined spatial patterns (n = 215) of snowy plover nests in saline lakes in the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas. At 104 nests, we examined the influence of substrate type on nest temperatures and heat mitigation. Snowy plover nests were more likely to be found near an object, on pebble substrate, and with fewer plants than random sites. High use areas were generally located in areas with pebble substrate and on human-made or natural islands, berms, and peninsulas. Overall, nests placed on pebble substrate had lower temperatures during the day than nests placed on sand substrates. Nest placement on pebble substrate may be valuable to nesting snowy plovers, providing thermal advantages to incubating adults and depressing potentially high nest predation rates. Management guidelines for this region should emphasize the importance of addressing key elements of snowy plover nesting habitat including the presence of pebble substrate and reducing vegetation encroachment. © 2012 The Wildlife Society. 相似文献
